Juliette Achieng Omollo - Contemporary Dance

I have been a dancer for close to 18 years.  I started out with cabaret and traditional dance. I then attended contemporary dance technique classes in  the year 2000 after which I decided to concentrate on contemporary dance as I found freedom to tell my stories in my own unique way. In 2003, together with two other dancers we founded a dance company called JOKAJOK DANCE!  Our objective is to create dance pieces that tell our stories in new ways. Our base as a contemporary dance company is traditional dance. We have been involved in dance collaborations with dancers from within and without Kenya. We are also involved in training others in contemporary dance techniques.

I am also a founder of the organization Dance Forum-Nairobi which is involved in holding a dance festival in Nairobi known as ‘The Festival of Solos and Duets’.  The festival has been running for 4 years,  it’s objective is to have a platform for Kenyan dancers and to invite dance pieces from the rest of the world to be showcased in Nairobi.

Dance Forum-Nairobi runs a training program that is in its third year. The training is on traditional and contemporary dance techniques. This program aims to provide quality dance training for emerging dancers.

As a personal and collective interest of the dance field in Kenya, we started researching on traditional dance three years ago. Our interest is in archiving for future generations or anyone interested in researching dance in Kenya to find a resource of information, and to have our heritage documented.
