Members Peter Dennis Okwaro - Coordinator Movable Heritage I have worked in the heritage sector since 1991. Joining the National Museums of Kenya 20 years ago with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, I have held many different positions in the heritage sector over the years, including stints as an Educational Officer; as a Senior Curator in Charge of Meru Museum; as a senior curator in charge of Regional Museums at the National Museums of Kenya headquarters and as the acting coordinator of Education programs in the National Museums of Kenya. I also have worked for two years as the Acting Executive Director of AFRICOM, the International Council of African Museums, before my current posting with the Centre for Heritage development in Africa. Since joining the heritage sector, I have gained vast experience and undertaken several professional development courses in culture and heritage. I have a certificate in Culture and Art management of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa and a certificate in Museology from the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, Japan, among many other qualifications. I love culture and Heritage, and my role in the En-Compass project gives me a great opportunity to promote it in ways that are most exciting – exciting because it involves bringing many people, from many different countries, many cultures, … together to share their diversity – all kinds of diversities, if you ‘see’ what I mean. But also important is that this project appreciates that even within a country, citizens do not know, understand and appreciate their own diverse cultures. En-Compass tries to provide participants with an opportunity to discover and document their own cultures. After all, how can we appreciate global cultures if we do not appreciate our own? |
